A few weeks ago as Claudia was planning a trip to Wyoming to see her son, she brought the CBS lessons over to me early in the week. Usually I just put them in the core group packets on Thursday morning when we arrive at the church. This week I could have done that in advance, but I didn’t. So, on Thursday morning, as I was dividing up the lessons, I realized—out of the shrink-wrap—I was finding not just Lesson 5s but some Lessons 5, 6, 7, and 8! And certainly not enough Lesson 5s for everyone. What to do? I called Claudia’s husband’s office to see if I could meet him at their house to find the correct number of Lesson 5s, but I had to leave a message. Then someone suggested calling Claudia since maybe she wasn’t in the air yet. Well, she wasn’t even out of Dyersburg yet!!!!! As she had been preparing to leave her house at 6:30 am for the drive to Memphis, she had received a call that her flight had been cancelled. She had been able to book a later flight, but she was out running an errand as we spoke. She was only too happy to return home, find the complete set of Lesson 5s and bring them to the church. Crisis averted!
Our apologies to the other passengers, but in His Providence God cancelled that flight so we could get our Lessons!

Farewell to a Faithful Friend

Can you really call a car a friend? Well, no matter what, the Intrepid was faithful!
On March 4 we said “Good-bye” to our 2002 Dodge Intrepid with its 241,313 miles and—if cars could talk—many travel stories. Although it never made it to California, we did drive the Intrepid to Minnesota twice, Texas twice, Louisiana once, Georgia twice, and Pennsylvania six times. Of course this is not to mention the thousands upon thousands upon thousands of miles Willis drove the Intrepid on every road in West Tennessee, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois for work. What is that word for attributing human characteristics to inanimate objects? Because note the definition in the American Heritage Dictionary for intrepid: “Resolutely courageous; fearless. See Synonyms at brave.”
I think it fits!
Note: I took this photo because I like palindromes and wanted to record this one. Although I wanted to drive the Intrepid for another year, the end of our time together arrived sooner than I had anticipated; I’m glad I had taken the photo.

To Pennsylvania in the Snow

When I was growing up we had two holidays in February: President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, and President George Washington’s Birthday, February 22. Come to think of it, February was really a very full month considering it’s the shortest month of the year AND it contains Valentine’s Day and our two most famous presidents’ birthdays. We spent a lot of class time learning about Lincoln and Washington; the bulletin boards were packed with artwork and essays. In fact, portraits of Lincoln and Washington are, in my mind, inextricable associated with Valentine hearts! (I am hopeful that children still learn about Presidents Lincoln and Washington.) Now we just have a generic Presidents’ Day Holiday, a day when schools are closed and stores have big sales. I could write more about that, but perhaps I’d better move on to the real subject of this post!
Hannah and I--Willis had to be in Atlanta on Sunday for a training--traveled on Thursday and Friday prior to the holiday to the snow and ice of Pennsylvania to visit Bethany and Ben at Grove City College. On Friday we were able to listen to Bethany perform a piano solo in a Friday afternoon recital and play with the orchestra Friday evening. Ben was busy all day Saturday with his newly-joined fraternity activities, but we did enjoy lunch with him after church on Sunday. Regular visits to the college as well as visits from Bethany’s friends to our home have resulted in relationships with some wonderful college students—Bethany and Ben head my list:-)—and I truly cherish these visits to reconnect, hear about recent experiences, see how God is at work in their lives, and learn of plans for the future. Thank you, Grove City College friends, for your wonderful hospitality!
